Heavy rains used to cause billions of gallons of waste from D.C.'s combined sewers to overflow into the Anacostia River.
Now a giant tunnel built by DC Water captures 90% of the sewage overflows and sends it for treatment. Another tunnel is under construction that should prevent nearly 100% of overflows, says Anacostia Riverkeeper.
