Helping Alabama’s Small Water Systems Meet New Lead Regulations

With over 400 small water systems in Alabama, ensuring compliance with new drinking water regulations is no small task. April Nabors of Birmingham Water Works saw an opportunity to help.

Through her leadership capstone project, she developed a hands-on approach to guide five local systems in meeting the updated Lead and Copper Rule requirements.

By collaborating with mayors, operators, and town officials, she built a practical toolbox of resources to streamline data collection, reporting, and long-term compliance.

"We’ve equipped them with the confidence and tools to navigate future regulations," says Nabors.

Thanks to her efforts, all five systems are fully prepared ahead of schedule, demonstrating the power of collaboration in strengthening small water systems.

Nabors is an alum of the Water Innovation Leadership Development program of Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment and Duke Environment Plus.
