Amy Parmenter is the Chief Administrator for the Rhode Island Department of Health Center for Drinking Water Quality.
With most of Rhode Island’s water systems relying on small groundwater sources, her team enforces a protective radius around drinking water wells, free from contamination, to ensure source water protection. Thanks to the Safe Drinking Water Act, funding through SRF capitalization grant set-asides has enabled Rhode Island to support cooperative agreements, technical assistance, and vital source water programs.
Despite challenges, especially given Rhode Island’s status as the second densest state in the U.S., Parmenter emphasizes the importance of maintaining these safeguards amidst economic development pressures.
