Water recycling isn't just for utilities.
On farms in Iowa, tile drains remove excess water from soil and typically carry it, along with nutrient and pesticide pollution, into local waterways.
Now some farmers are capturing the water in ponds and using it to irrigate crops. That reduces the nutrients entering waterways by 60 to 90 percent and lowers the fertilizers that farmers need to add to fields. The irrigation also increases yield of crops.
