A new approach to farming in Iowa is tackling flooding and water pollution. Relay cropping keeps living roots in the soil year-round by planting a cereal grain in the fall, which then hands off to soybeans in the spring.

This method reduces runoff, improves water retention, and boosts resilience against extreme weather.

“It’s one crop handing off to the second crop,” explains Ross Evelsizer of Northeast Iowa RC&D. With research showing relay cropping can cut flooding by up to 25%, more farmers are embracing this climate-smart solution.
