Mississippi By Nature
This new series will explore the use of nature based solutions to help the iconic river and its communities, from the mouth in Louisiana to its source in Minnesota.
The Mississippi is 2,440 miles long, has a watershed of 1.2 million square miles, and drains 40 percent of the United States. The name comes from the Algonquian word for great river and it is foundational to the environment, economy, and culture in America.
The river has been dramatically altered by human activity, including the levees and other hard infrastructure to prevent flooding and preserve navigation, as well as the pollution from nutrients and chemicals flowing off agricultural fields.
But now there are efforts underway to use nature based solutions to improve management of the Mississippi for the benefit of the water, land, and people.
