An estimated 9 to 12 million lead service lines remain in the ground in the U.S., with water flowing through them into people’s homes. While funding is critical to winning the fight against lead pipes, the challenge is much more complex. Solutions are needed for locating lead lines, creating informative maps, ensuring equity in replacement, and communicating with customers, as discussed in this episode with the Environmental Policy Innovation Center’s Maureen Cunningham, Deputy Director for Water, and Jessie Norriss, Senior Analyst for Water and Technology Policy. They explain how their organization is holding a competition called the Water Data Prize to gather new and cost-effective ways to tackle these challenges and accelerate the removal of lead lines across the country.
